      <image:title>Our Journey - FIRST STEPS</image:title>
<image:caption>The Geopark concept to Banks Peninsula was first conceived in 2011, following the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence. Since this time, researchers from the University of Canterbury, supported by Frontiers Abroad Aotearoa (an organisation that supports graduate students from the US to experience our unique geological environment), have been undertaking background studies to develop the fundamentals of a Geopark and have begun to consult interested stakeholders in the Banks Peninsula community. Peter Ramsden was key in these initiating stages and phases, bringing together people, ideas and concepts. The School of Earth and Environment, University of Canterbury, has facilitated research through research method courses, in which semester students undertake an individual research project. Research components have been delivered at national and international conferences, local presentations, and in online formats. <image:title>Our Journey - LISTENING</image:title>
<image:caption>Over our decade of development various hui have been hosted, engaging and informing key stakeholders, community organisations, and local, regional, and central government of the opportunities that a Geopark on Banks Peninsula can offer. These also provided a forum for active discussions, in which all parties gained a better understanding of the Geopark concept and the journey it will take to achieve this.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In listening to the community we heard that a Geopark on Banks Peninsula should be driven by learning and engagement and to connect people to place. This has become our mandate in Geopark development. We have also developed our logo that links to the landscape, trails, and connections and is adapted from the underbelly markings of the Hectors Dolphin. The Geopark wishes to convey the stories of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula, the place and its landscapes, primarily by developing Geosites – a series of interpretation panels along a pathway, sharing intertwined stories (past, present, and future) at places of connection. Geosites are supported by online information, learning and education programmes, and supporting resources (i.e., pamphlets).</image:caption>

      <image:title>GEOPARKS - WHAT IS A GEOPARK?</image:title>
<image:caption>Geoparks serve as a means for visitors to explore the outdoors through a lens of geology and environment, heritage, sustainability, and local economy. Geology is the foundation of landscape, biodiversity, and human culture. Therefore, all visitors who travel for landscape, wildlife or culture do so because of the unique geology. This applies directly (adventure activities, scientific exploration, nature/wildlife watching etc.) and indirectly (appreciating the scenery from car or through a cultural lens).</image:caption>

      <image:title>GEOPARKS - GEOPARK CONCEPT</image:title>
<image:caption>The Geopark concept was first established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1998 to recognise geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance can be celebrated and managed within a holistic framework of protection, education, and sustainable development. In 2018, UNESCO New Zealand formally acknowledged Geoparks as a way of giving special recognition to parts of Aotearoa/New Zealand.</image:caption>

      <image:title>GEOPARKS - OUR GEOPARK</image:title>
<image:caption>Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula Geopark will engage people in the landscapes and stories of Banks Peninsula. Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula Geopark is a local resident, rūnanga, and community group-initiated concept designed to provide local and place-based educational experiences to a range of target visitors, and provide a mechanism for sustainable growth and development. Banks Peninsula has a unique geology on which has evolved a diverse biosphere, cultural history, concepts of conservation, and land use practices. These features are key to UNESCO Geopark accreditation, which is the ultimate aim of this initiative.</image:caption>

      <image:title>OUR NAME - TE PĀTAKA O RĀKAIHAUTŪ</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Te Rangi Hīroa Ramsden proposed the “Paihere Geopark”. The translation of paihere is “to bind together in a bundle”. And comes from the statement “He tika te kupu a Mahuta e kī nei, kit e Kotahi te rākau a whati, engari mehemea ka maha ngā rākau ka paihaerengia kia mātotoru ai e kore rawa e whati (TJ 13/7/1899:10)” / Mahuta was right when he said that if there is one stick it can be broken, but of there are many sticks bound together into a thick bundle it will never be broken. In using Paihere direct relationships could be made to the aspirations of the Geopark, to not only bundle together knowledge but also to bring together communities, and in doing so becoming more resilient. This working name existed for two years until Peter Te Rangi Hīroa Ramsden further reflected and believed Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Geopark is the name to reflect the origins of the whenua and an agreed te reo name for the peninsula. Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū translates as “the storehouse of Rākaihautū”. Rākaihautū, a Waitaha ancestor, explored the Te Wai Ponamu /South Island with his kō (carved digging stick) sculpting the rivers, valleys, lakes and landscapes as he travelled. After his tiring work he settled on Banks Peninsula as it was a place of bountiful resources. Satisfied Rākaihautū rested his kō (named Tūwhakaroria), which is preserved today as Tuhiraki / Mt Bossu. As Rākaihautū was sculptor of the land it is our pleasure to represent his heritage in the name of our Geopark, Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Geopark.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES - EXPANDING STORIES</image:title>
<image:caption>Overseas experience shows that partnerships within a Geopark enable further opportunities (i.e., education, guiding, ecotourism, community projects, employment, and sustainable development). Interpretation panels will be the main aspect seen when visiting the Geopark. But what is conveyed on an interpretation panel is limited by panel size and graphic design constraints. We view interpretation panels as a stepping stone to a deeper dive which may be by self-discovery (i.e., online) or by a guide expanding on the panels. Guiding within a Geosite opens opportunities for the embellishment of these stories. Importantly, the delivery of these expanded stories will be undertaken by the appropriate holder of this knowledge. Overseas Geoparks employ their own employed guides, promote accredited guides, or have established guiding agreements with partners. Importantly, guiding provides employment opportunities within local communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES - EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM</image:title>
<image:caption>The Geopark is one large classroom. The Geopark provides a platform for development and delivery of educational resources and lesson plans for both learners and educators. Interpretation panels provide a resource for visiting groups that can be augmented with additional learning resources. Overseas Geopark models have the Geopark employing its own educators to deliver outdoor learning experiences, to act as a coordinating agency linking to providers within the community, and to act as a platform for connecting learners with providers. Education within the Geopark provides opportunities for specialist training and employment in the development and delivery of programmes.</image:caption>

He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoys hiking with his family in Rock Creek Park.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PETER TE RANGI HĪROA RAMSDEN - MAHI</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter’s mahi and investigations into the Geopark led to an MOU between Papatipu rūnanga and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu for collaborative investigations. Peter initiated and supported various hui, he was a working group member, and a founding Trustee. Peter’s character extended across all barriers and brought together communities and organisations, a trait apparent in his interactions with all he encountered. With a quick quip he defused situations, or with a sharp prod or email a meeting would occur and actions result. Due to ill health Peter stepped down from the Geopark Trust in 2018, but he continued to advocate for the Geopark until his passing.</image:caption>

<image:title>PETER TE RANGI HĪROA RAMSDEN - WISDOM AND GUIDANCE</image:title>
<image:caption>It was a great pleasure of mine, and an academic highlight, to have co-authored an international conference presentation with Peter and with my father, Nigel (also a Geopark Trustee), in 2019. The relationship and friendship between Peter and Nigel provided a cornerstone for the Geopark, one built on mutual respect and trust, which Peter also kindly extended to me. The time he personally gave to me, the students working alongside me, and those around him was greatly appreciated, respected, and cherished. Peter’s guidance, advice, and friendship has shaped the development of the Geopark. Much of his wisdom, knowledge, and advice are embedded within the approaches, development, and values of the Geopark.</image:caption>
